The design was inspired by function: since its main purpose is to hold an incense stick at an angle, I envisioned it as an arrow, with the rising smoke becoming a continuation of the arrow's path, giving the piece a refined, cohesive look. I wanted to portray the swallow as caught off guard: its wings swept back in flight, but its body still completely unaware.
